1. Sci-Fi Month
We are participating in Sci-Fi Month along with several other blogs.
What is Sci-Fi Month?
From Rinn Reads:
Sci-Fi Month is a month-long blog event, that I hosted for the first time in 2013, created to celebrate everything amazing about science fiction. From TV shows to movies, books to comics, and everything else in between, it was intended to help us share our love and passion for this genre and its many, many fandoms. It was such a success – and I honestly wasn’t expecting that many people to join in – that people were already asking in December whether it would be held again the next year! It happened again in 2014, co-hosted by Oh, the Books!, but I was a very poor co-host due to my studies seriously affecting my available time. This year however, I’m in a similar situation to the first year, so I feel more prepared!
Sci-Fi Month has a schedule that all participants can add to, meaning everyone can clearly see what is being posted each day. This also encourages participants to comment on and visit other blogs. More information on adding to the schedule below.
What does this mean? Look for a focus on science fiction in November.
Some examples of Galleywampus’s Sci-Fi Month offerings:
-We are participating in the Read-Along for Becky Chambers’ book The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. We are hosting a discussion here on our site on 10/13. Stay tuned for a link and more information.
If you’d like to participate in the read along, get your hands on a copy and begin reading ASAP.
I’m 1/4 of the way through so far, and it’s a lot of fun. There are some elements elements here that will please many Firefly fans.
Here’s the schedule:
Week 1 (Friday, November 6th): “Transit” to “Port Coriol” (95 pages) at Over the Effing Rainbow
Week 2 (Friday, November 13th): “Port Coriol” to “The Last War” (110 pages) here, at Galleywampus. Howdy.
Week 3 (Friday, November 20th): “The Last War” to “Heresy” (107 pages) at Claire Rousseau’s blog.
Week 4 (Friday, November 27th): “Heresy” to end (90 pages) at Over the Effing Rainbow
There is also a Goodreads discussion.
About the book
A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heart
When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn’t expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past.
And nothing could be further from what she’s known than the crew of the Wayfarer.
From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they’ll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn’t part of the job description.
The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure, and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe…as long as you actually like them.
Interview with Julie Czerneda
We have an interview with Julie Czerneda scheduled for 11/10. Her latest work, This Gulf of Time and Stars, comes out 11/3. It is the first book in her new Reunification trilogy, and takes place in her Trade Pact Universe.
Other Blogs Participarting in Sci-Fi Month:
Several members of Galleywampus will be particpating in NaNoWriMo during the month of November.
Expect less output this month, but also expect content. We’re not closed for business. It’s going to be a busy month!
What is NaNoWriMo?
From the NaNoWriMo website:
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing.
On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30.
Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel.
That’s right. At least three of your Galleywampus peeps are attempting to write a novel this month. We’ll keep you posted. But not too often.
